Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Southampton are part of the "University" centers of the State University of New York. I was invited to attend a Counselor Visitation Day that was attended by guidance counselors from Massachusetts and Connecticut. Stony Brook actively recruits non-New Yorkers for this very impressive institution.
Stony Brook is celebrating 50 years of excellence in higher education. It's faculty has won Nobel Prizes and made groundbreaking discoveries in science, mathematics and medicine. It's University Hospital and Medical School are known worldwide as a teaching and research facility. The six freshman Undergraduate Colleges provide a small school feel within the university. Each college has it's own theme, culture and personality and is staffed by a Faculty Director, an Academic Advisor and a Quad Director to make the transition to college life a breeze.
Stony Brook offers over 100 majors and pre-professional programs in pre-law, pre-med and teacher certification. The university also has several selective programs for high achieving students. These include the Honors College (students get scholarship support), the Honors Program in Computer Science which is a joint BS/MS program, the Scholars in Medicine program which is an eight year combined undergraduate and medical degree track, and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program which creates a small community of scholars for women gifted in math, science and engineering. The WISE program includes research opportunities and scholarship support. The newest addition to Stony Brook is its Southampton campus. This is where students and professors participate in programs that are committed to solving the world's environmental issues.
Located 60 miles from New York City, Stony Brook has it all. A beautiful 1100 acre main campus, the Southampton campus (located in the Hamptons; what's not to like about that!), great facilities, great professors, and a wonderful Admissions Office staff. This is definitely an institution to look at very closely.
