Good private counselors want to know their students’ admissions news, whether it’s the joy of acceptances or the disappointment of denials. If you want to get these updates, don’t wait to receive the news—reach out and ask your families for it.
In the early years of Collegewise, we sometimes made the mistake of assuming that our families would update us as the admissions news came in. After all, we’ve always signed off of our final application meetings by encouraging families to keep us updated.
But sometimes families forget that you want to hear their admissions results. Sometimes parents mistakenly assume that their kids shared the news. And it can be hard for students to admit if an admissions decision isn’t what the student hoped for.
So now we actively reach out to our senior families via phone and email to check in so we can stay much more up-to-date with the admissions outcomes. We have the chance to celebrate their admits and encourage them in the event of denials. And it gives us a reason to contact families we haven’t seen since we finished their applications in the fall.
So don’t wait for admissions updates. Reach out to your families and ask for them.
